New technology now helps us detect dental decay that may have previously gone undected. The Diagnodent finds decay before it is visible on x-rays or before it can be detected with a dental explorer to help Dr. Hirschfield find cavities below the tooth surface. Diagnodent utilizes a laser technology that scans your teeth with harmless pulses of light. When decay is present, the laser light changes wavelength and sensors translate this to a digital and audible read-out. Generally, the higher the number and louder the sound, the larger the cavity. Finding cavities in its earliest stage prevents more extensive damage, and your restorations will be smaller, less costly, and you will preserve more of your own natural tooth.
